It’s a museum! But of a different kind. The objects (read saris) displayed here are up for sale.
And are surely of lasting interest and value to the fairer sex! Yes, the Silk Museum standing tall at the Dadar TT circle houses not only an exclusive range of saris but also boasts of a clientele from the film, political and the industrial fraternity. In fact, Genelia D’Ssouza who tied the knot with Ritiesh Deshmukh recently, got some of her bridal trousseau from the store.
Silk Museum also takes pride in catering to the Thackeray bahus — Rashmi, Smita and Sharmila. Founded in 1978 by Chapsi Shah, this sari business has been running successfully for the past 45 years.
Costing within a range of Rs 100 — two Lakhs, there’s a saree for any budget. A reticent Shah reveals, “Money is not the criteria. What I want at the end of the day is customer satisfaction. It is of prime importance to me. To keep my customers happy I keep my profit margin at its lowest. For example, a sari that has costed me Rs 100 is sold at Rs 110. I don’t believe in being greedy and have followed this rule for over four decades. My clients are well aware of this.”
No wonder Shah has people thronging to his shop from all corners of Maharashtra. “I have families from Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Satara to name a few places, who during the marriage season, hire buses and shop throughout the day and leave in the evening. Because of the wide range available and different prices catering to their pockets, Silk Museum is like a one-stop-shop for them.”
Having run the sari business successfully for so many years now, Shah has broadened his horizons and ventured into real estate development, too. “It was natural progression in a way. I have several construction projects on currently. Again, my mission is to give a good product and it’s not about the money.”
